I took Shane to Audiology today. About 2 weeks ago, I was talking to Kelli (his speech therapist) about how mumbled his speech is. I asked if I should go to Audiology. She said, yeah, I would. But she didn't seem very concerned. She reassured me saying that he just really started talking and he just turned 2. So I made the appt and almost cancelled it thinking it was gonna be a waste of time. Well boy was I wrong.
The doctor he saw could not have been nicer. She first looked into his ears and tested them. She said the eardrum wasn't moving as it should in either ear. So we went into test the hearing. He wasn't responding to things I was able to hear. She kept having to turn up the volume and then he would react. There was this duck that made a sound and moved right above him. He didn't even flinch when that sounded. (which the doctor later referred to as saying kids usually jump at that).
While in the hearing room, she asked if I noticed him not reacting to sounds. I said yes and immediately knew there was a problem. She came out and said 'let's talk.' So I cried and called dad who was on his way in to help with Brennan and Owen but thankful that he came then as he was able to ask questions too.
She said he has moderate hearing loss. She thinks he has fluid in his ears. We are going to see Dr Limmer tomorrow as she requested to see if Dr Limmer will put him on abx. I don't think she will. So we'll go back to audiology in 4-6 wks and if no better, Shane will see ENT. They may do tubes. Dad asked what was worse case scenario - she said hearing aids. God, that's hard to hear!
I truly believe the loss is due to fluid. I hope so anyway because maybe then he can hear us and talk more clearly. I don't think he'll need hearing aids. I just feel awful but hopeful that his speech may improve. My poor little boy!
Update: 4/10/12 - Lots of fluid in both ears. Appt made for f/u in audiology in May. Called audiologist - she thinks fluid has been there for awhile. Thinks ENT will be the plan unless he's clear in 4 weeks.
